The Afro Rook Beginner’s Guide to Openings

(2 customer reviews)

A plain-English openings book for players who know the rules and freeze after 1.e4 — ten openings explained by the ideas behind them, not by memorising moves.

Most openings books hand a beginner two hundred moves to memorise. This one takes ten openings and explains, in plain English, what each side is trying to achieve and what goes wrong when they forget it.

Inside

  • Ten openings: Italian, Scotch, London, Caro-Kann, French, Sicilian, King’s Indian, Queen’s Gambit, Slav and English
  • For each one: the first eight moves, the idea behind them, the two mistakes beginners make, and one model game
  • A one-page checklist to decide which opening suits you

Who it is for

Players rated roughly 600–1400 who can play a legal game and want a plan rather than a memory test.

Good to know

Written for club players, not computers: every line is one you can actually remember at the board.

I bought this thinking it was a nice green color, apparently it GREY! I’m color blind so I don’t care but my girlfriend says grey makes me look fat

I love grey hoodies! This is perfect with my grey Ninja shirt, when I get cold I throw this on and I can still be a Ninja.
